Ahhh, De Havilland

The nearest most of us manage to get to the essence of De Havilland is the Tiger Moth. In the '70s I was doing a little aerial survey work out of Strathallan (Auchteradar) in Scotland, hanging around waiting for the weather to clear I managed to sample the delights of the Mosquito. Kermit Weeks' latest acquisition was having a long range fuel system fitted whilst in transit on its way to its new home in the USA. ... The Tiger is of course that much more accessible, still fairly widely available if becoming less so as the years roll by. ... After a few minutes he had me hooked with his tales of dope, fabric and Gypsy Major engineering challenges - all liberally sauced with colourful renditions of the joy to be had inserted inside large formations of Tigers sweeping across southern England. Out came his laptop and onto the ScanDisk Cruzer went a bunch of photos, a sample of which I post here for your delight.

When the first event occurred I was touring the National Trust's property in Devon, Arlington Court admiring exquisite watercolours produced by a young aristo on his Grand Tour in the mid 1800s. ... Perhaps not, maybe we all needed a reminder that we live on the ninth rock from the sun and walk a planet, not a computer based construct where everything is perfect and predictable. ... Knowledge may not be everything but crikey, if you don't have it and the clock is running on a partially prostrated industry with thousands of jobs at risk, then it's a lot. ... I am no fan of the European experiment in waste and corruption but when it comes to airspace a properly coordinated and wholistic view moving us towards progress is very welcome. It took airspace managers an unhealthy amount of time to get their collective acts together when 'Old Smokey' blew, estimates vary but we probably lost three unnecessary days with their attendant swaths of financial penalties across the world. It has taken decades to bring together the twenty seven nations that form the Eurocontrol project, let's hope that they can sign some documents and put in place the plugs to connect up the system so that it works safely and seamlessly for the travelling public.
